AiR Defense

AiR Defense is an augmented reality tower defense game that transforms your real-world surroundings into a battlefield. Deploy defensive towers, fend off waves of enemy fighter jets, and see how long you can survive as the skies grow increasingly hostile.

Your world. Your tower. Defend at all costs.

AiR Defense brings the classic tower defense genre into augmented reality, turning your surroundings into an interactive battlefield. Using your phone’s camera, scan the environment to create a playing field that blends the virtual game world with the real one. Place your first defensive tower and prepare for incoming waves of enemy fighter jets determined to destroy it. Survive successive attacks to earn the opportunity to deploy additional towers and strengthen your defenses.

With no final finish line in sight, your mission is simple: hold the line, adapt your strategy, and survive for as long as possible!

Development

AiR Defense was developed as a solo project in Unity for Android, using AR Foundation to integrate augmented reality gameplay into the player’s physical surroundings. The project combines real-world environment tracking with virtual object placement, enemy behavior, and wave-based tower defense mechanics.

Key technical aspects include:

  • Technology stack: Unity, AR Foundation, Android.
  • Surface detection and tracking: Detects real-world surfaces through the device camera, allowing players to establish a playable area and place defensive towers within their surroundings.
  • Image anchors and markers: Uses image-based tracking to recognize designated visual markers and establish reference points for positioning and anchoring virtual content in the real world.
  • Light estimation: Uses AR light estimation to adapt virtual objects to the lighting conditions of the physical environment, helping integrate game elements more naturally into the camera view.
  • AR object placement: Enables players to position defensive structures within the tracked environment, making the physical space an integral part of the gameplay.
  • Wave-based enemy AI: Enemy fighter jets spawn in successive waves and target the player’s towers, creating an ongoing defensive challenge.
  • Progression and gameplay systems: Implements wave progression, survival-based scoring, and the gradual unlocking of additional tower placements as players clear enemy waves.

The project explores the practical application of mobile AR technologies in an interactive game, combining spatial tracking, environment-aware rendering, and familiar tower defense mechanics into a location-independent augmented reality experience.
